From 21 May to 4 June 2025, the historic city of Bergen will host the Bergen International Festival (Festspillene i Bergen), Scandinavia’s largest and most esteemed festival for music and performing arts. Established in 1953, this annual event transforms Bergen into a vibrant hub of cultural expression, featuring a diverse array of performances across various genres and disciplines.

The 2025 edition promises an eclectic mix of events, including:

  • Artist in Residence: William Kentridge – The acclaimed South African artist will present his latest works, including the opening performance “”The Great Yes, The Great No”” and the film “”Oh To Believe in Another World”” set to Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony.
  • Festival Musician: Grete Pedersen – The esteemed conductor will lead performances with the Norwegian Soloists’ Choir and collaborate with artist Emilie Nicolas.
  • Festival Academy of Bergen – A platform for young talents, featuring masterclasses with mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, performances by Camerata Bergen, and concerts by emerging artists.
  • Open-Air Events – Free concerts and participatory events at Festival Square, including family singalongs and children’s play areas.
  • Grand Finale – A closing concert featuring Mendelssohn’s “”A Midsummer Night’s Dream”” and Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A minor, performed by pianist Shani Diluka.

  • Grieghallen – The main concert hall, hosting major performances and the opening and closing ceremonies.
